I understand your Italian friends refusal at even thinking that a Hawaiian pizza could even be called "pizza".
Even the history of pizza has a very specific recipe, time line and origin as shown on this great site.

The American culture has taken the basic "pizza" and tweaked it into its own new American cuisine.
I have seen some American pizza recipes that would make a traditional Italian fume with rage.

So, as long as we separate the American style from the Italian style, we should all great along at the dinner table.

I have an Italian friend who REFUSES to equate Pineapples and Ham with her native Italian Pizza!!
