1980 Abba The winner takes it all, the loser standing small? Do you agree with the sentiment of this song?

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this song, do you agree it's all about winning and not just the competing?

Lyrics below:
I don't wanna talk
About the things we've gone through
Though it's hurting me
Now it's history
I've played all my cards
And that's what you've done too
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play

The winner takes it all
The loser standing small
Beside the victory
That's her destiny

I was in your arms
Thinking I belonged there
I figured it made sense
Building me a fence
Building me a home
Thinking I'd be strong there
But I was a fool
Playing by the rules

The gods may throw a dice
Their minds as cold as ice
And someone way down here
Loses someone dear
The winner takes it all
The loser has to fall
It's simple and it's plain
Why should I complain.

But tell me does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you?
Does it feel the same
When she calls your name?
Somewhere deep inside
You must know I miss you
But what can I say
Rules must be obeyed

The judges will decide
The likes of me abide
Spectators of the show
Always staying low
The game is on again
A lover or a friend
A big thing or a small
The winner takes it all

I don't wanna talk
If it makes you feel sad
And I understand
You've come to shake my hand
I apologize
If it makes you feel bad
Seeing me so tense
No self-confidence
But you see
The winner takes it all
The winner takes it all...

I get what your saying phillpy but if you take the point of the just the song title "The Winner takes it all, the loser standing small" do you agree with this as a phrase then in some ways you could argue no because after all it's the taking part that counts right? :D

On the other hand though how many times is the loser remembered compared to the victor?

When we're talking about love and relationships , there are no prizes for being second best to the person you want to be with. :)

And it's horribly painful.

However, in most aspects of life, competing well and being a runner up is satisfying, admired and usually well rewarded. Sure it's painful to lose a sports final, or not close the business deal you really wanted. But mostly if you were in a position to be in the final, or had a shot at getting the deal or the job, you are in pretty good shape and you'll do well in life.

What sucks is when you are unable to even be in the game.

They have great vocals. Do they do social commentaries?

I watched a documentary about Abba last Saturday, it gave extra poignancy to the song, especially:
"But tell me does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you?
Does it feel the same
When she calls your name? "

This song was written shortly after Bjorn and Agnetha had got divorced.

I must ask another Abba question, very interesting!

That's not really a song about winning and losing and competing in general.

That's a song about how someone felt after their marriage broke up and their partner got together with someone else.

It's not something to agree with or disagree with, it's just an expression how one person felt in that situation.
