As with furniture, any re-sale jewelry is safest because you are not contributing to new, resource-wasting production. Even if you are recycling from other items, you still need to buy supplies for the final effort.

But buying second hand jewelry increases the value of jewelry as an investment, which encourages people to buy (and make) more of it.

I would say hemp, with recycled beads. I know people who get old purses/clothes at Goodwill and yardsales, and take the beads off of them to use in making jewelry. They are really lovely. Although to make them dressy, they recycle old wire/chains to use.

The beaches are already being stripped of shells, which are an important component. And, gathering reeds could contribute to coastal erosion.

I suggest jewelry hand made from waste items that were made for other purposes (and thus would have been made anyway). Especially good would be items that are hard to recycle and non-biodegradable. I'm trying to think of examples that I have seen in craft booths. One that comes to mind is a lady who makes jewelry and decorative art items out of old beer bottle caps. They would be made anyway and otherwise would go to the dump. I see there are a number of people selling such and showing how on the web.

There is an entire niche devoted to eco-friendly jewelery. Any jewelry made from recycled precious metals (and ONLY from recycled precious metals) helps the environment. Some online retailers carry jewelry in this category.

I'd argue that any jewelry which avoids gold and diamonds are eco friendly.

Gold, because various mining methods of gold are damaging to the environment (e.g. strip mining, which gouges holes in the earth to extract ore), and diamonds because is involves similar disruption to the environment, as well as damaging human lives in the case of conflict diamonds.
