A person I used to play in an MMO died a few years ago. We held a service in game for his character at his request. It was small only about 20 people we went to his home in the game and each of us took an item to remember him by, words were said then his account was deleted. So I think I know where you are coming from, this was a guy I played with for 3+ years and knew his family and basically his rea life story. It hurt when I found out he had passed even though we knew it waws coming.
My recommendation is to just get the group of friends together in the setting you met and became friends. If it was in chat go to the chat (voice or typing). Have everyone maybe say a little something to honor his/her memory, talk about the loss. Maybe try to talk about something he enjoyed for a while dedicte the session to him and that should be good. The point really is to express a feeling of loss and honor the memories so do whatever you are comfortable with.

What I am thinking is you and his group of friends in skype meet altogether one day and Skype, this time you can remember and honor his memory by talking about him and saying some prayers for him.
Also if there is a funeral service going on, all of you can go online and go to the funeral's website and view the funeral service online, at the same time you're skyping. Most of the funeral houses have this online service nowadays, so you must check if this service is available. When my father passed away last year, I unfortunately cannot go home, I watched the wake for how many days funeral service online, I tell you it comforted me somehow seeing all my family present at the funeral parlor as if I was there too. This online service by the funeral houses is very appropriate and gratifying for those who are far away when this sad events happens to anyone.
Hope this helps.

I received some bad news today and need advice. A very good online friend passed away, he had a small group of friends on a skype group.
One of us suggested that we have an online service in his memory, but I dont have the first clue how to go about this. Has anyone done this, or heard of it, and is there an etiquette associated with this type of thing?

I will do the getting together on skype session, that seems most appropriate now.
I am afraid he lived on the other side of the world and I only managed to discover his passing through finding his local restaurant and contacting the manager there, he told me after the funeral so I cannot use that idea. However, you have taught me something I did not know, I think that is such a fantastic service for people who cannot attend.
Thank you for responding, I really appreciate it.
