Funny that you ask I actually asked my pizza guy this weekend. It was a 1.75 dollar charge for delivery and he said he gets half. Im sorry but .87 cents is not enough for the driver. Your looking at gas plus wear and tear and the people don't have much money in the first place. I usually give 3 bucks or so but no less I look at it as a convenience and if I don't want to pay the guy the extra I'll go pick it up. If you can afford a pizza spread the wealth around in this economy because you could be delivery pizzas next week

So, you are wondering where do delivery charges go? The restaurant adds delivery charges to cover costs of delivery. Gas to fuel the delivery vehicle is not free, so they are basically charging you for that, at least. Some restaurants may provide nicer packaging with the delivery fee, but do not count on this.
Pizza delivery people not only expect a tip, but if you do not tip them, they do not think too highly of the person they delivered pizza to. It's not like they usually think they did something wrong, they usually think you did something wrong. There is no required tip, but pizza delivery tips usually run 15% to 20%. Do realize that the drivers are typically paid minimum wage and they depend on tips to make this job worth their while.
Times you should not tip:
They make a mistake in the delivery.
Driver gets lost and your delivery is delayed.
The driver doesn't have the correct change.
The driver is not friendly or has an attitude.
Obviously, when you pick up the pizza you do not need to tip the driver.
According to this article, "Pizza drivers feel gas pinch, delivery charge HURTS not helps"
"Let's get something straight. The delivery charge is not part of the driver's tip and must not be confused as such. Yet, the misleading label has tricked a great many into lowering the tip, believing the driver received the extra dollar. Most customers pay at the door with the same $20 for an $18 order that used to be $17. It is a loss of a dollar for the driver each time. The tiny raise in mileage makes the loss closer to 95 cents on each delivery. Thus, the delivery charge hurts the driver while the public believes just the opposite."

Do delivery charges go to the delivery person? Are they mandatory tips?
My local pizza place has a delivery charge. While I do not mind paying this, I really don't want to add a tip on top of it. However, being a tour guide, I know how annoying it can be when people don't tip.
So, I am wondering. Does this delivery charge go to the delivery person? Or do they expect tips on top of it?

• I checked with Pizza Hut when I picked up my order. You were right. The person stated that "it goes to corporate." Then, she clarified and said "and they don't even give that all back to the driver. They only get paid a dollar something for deliveries." So this answer is correct.

Definitely plus if we are drinking (which when pizza comes we usually are) I tell everybody to pony up a buck for the tip it the driver really appreciates it.

No. Unfortunately for the pizza delivery person, they never see the delivery charge. So, if you do not give a tip on top of the delivery charge, then your delivery person is going to think something was wrong with the service. Sometimes they do not think something is wrong the service, but they just do not think too highly of you. So, you are wondering where do delivery charges go? I have actually talked to 2 different pizza delivery people from different companys and they said they get half. I'm only basing it on 2 different companys but that seems to be the norm. I actually ask the pizza place when calling in as well as the delivery person to see if there stories match up because Im definitely going to believe the delivery person first.

Sorry most of them own there own cars with no mileage reimbursement thats where their half of the delivery charge comes in due to the higher than normal gas prices.
