Why do we recycle water bottles but not plastic bags?

I've always wondered this because they're both made of plastic. If it requires extra sorting because they're different types of plastic, wouldn't it be worth the investment because it could cut a lot of the world's trash?

I'm confused. I recycle my plastic bags...

Perhaps there are plastic bags that cannot be recycled. Some things cannot be recycled because of what they are made of...

On the source below, here's what they say cannot be recycled:

Do NOT include the following.
The following are considered contaminants and could jeopardize recycling programs:

NO food or cling wrap
NO prepackaged food bags including frozen food bags (e.g., prewashed salad bags)
NO film that has been painted or has excessive glue
NO other bags or films
NO bio-based or compostable plastic bags

@buddawiggi: 1) If you're going to flag my answer as "not helpful", then I'm more than willing to hear how you thought it unhelpful (although, in this case, I don't see how) and, 2) if you're going to comment using a link, I would appreciate some explanation. What do you want me to get out of that article?

@nichm: Since answers can be arranged in different orders, simply saying "view my response above" isn't always helpful. When you comment, please try to make it as self-contained as possible.

@buddawiggi: I appreciate your participation... This is not what would be considered an "opinion" kind of question, but you answered with something about your opinion. If you have some facts to share, that would be preferable.

@nichm: Nope... you have to tolerate poor questions/answers with the rest of us... But you can flag them with the "helpful/unhelpful" flags.

I do recycle my plastic bags. Wal-mart has a big plastic bag box so you can bring your thousands of Wal-mart plastic bags back to recycle.

I'm talking about at home. Why can't I put plastic bags:

in the recycling bin.

Aren't plastic bottles and plastic bags the same thing?

So shouldn't I be able to put them in the recycling bin?

I know the City of Toronto doesn't allow them, any idea why?

Gotcha, sorry for the misunderstanding. Are you referring to recycling in the Blue Box program? Because it looks like you can now...

"Blue Bin Program now accepts plastic bags and foam polystyrene
You can recycle plastic grocery and retail bags without drawstrings, metal detailing or hard plastic handles. Remove receipts. Place all plastic bags in one grocery or retail bag and tie handles together. You can also recycle foam polystyrene. This includes foam protective packaging, foam meat trays, foam takeout food containers, foam plates, foam egg cartons and foam coffee cups. All food residue must be removed. Details on how to recycle these items and the updated Toronto Recycles card are also available."

Sorry, I thought it was going to give me a chance to post my reference...
