Solar energy is pretty inefficient and expensive. They also have to be heavily subsidized in order to be profitable. Nuclear generates a lot of relatively cheap energy.
Hopefully solar panel technology will advance to the point where it is a cost effective option soon.

Why pursue fusion power plants when we could just set up a bunch of solar panels (or solar heat engines)?
