Putting heat tape on my waterline is my most important winter chore. It's really annoying to wake up in the morning and find out that you have no running water.
A close second would be to put plastic over the windows that get the worst of the wind. It really helps to keep my heating bill down!

clean the gutters and check the furnace.blow out the lines for your sprinkler system and faucets.
