Silent tsunamis does not refer to waves.

-quote-

"Silent tsunamis like real tsunamis regularly strike the developing world with ferocity as devastating as natural disaster which causes vast damages. Silent tsunamis of famine, disease, poverty and violence are silent because they rarely make the news among the non-issues of the day. Most news prioritizes political issues and conflict rather than what is really happening in our society. Like in the Philippines, nowadays if you watch the television all you can see are faces of PGMA and other politicians aiming political power and dominance. Almost half of the airing time of the news shows tackles these issues."

There is no real definition for a silent tsunami. What I have learned is that the global food crisis is being called "a silent tsunami" by the World Food Programme.

It is being caused by rising fuel costs, increased food demand from highly populated countries like India and China, natural disasters damaging or destroying crops and the growth of biofuels.
