It was believed that the female praying mantis would devour the male after mating. However, in 1984 a study was published in which he authors found the following results:
"Although female mantises sometimes ate their mates, the deadly act by no means occurred in every case. The behavior appeared to be influenced by captivity."
It does happen, though, as can be seen on this video:
