I graduated "Transylvania University" from Brasov. My specialisation was "Silvicultural and Exploitation of the forest". So, I can answer this question, since it is my work domain.
As long as the Christmas trees are not chopped down randomly, and for every tree you cut, you plant 2, there is nothing wrong with this. Most of the Christmas trees we all buy during the Holiday season, are planted to serve this purpose. The right amount is millions, not thousands.
So, for every tree, any tree you cut, you have to plant 2. If every person in this world would know this, trust me, the things will be different now.
The tree from your picture, was planted for this purpose. Many people don't know this, but this is true. It wasn't chopped from a forest. Yes, going to a forest and putting down thousands of trees, and leaving just a blank space, that is a crime. Probably a crime we will all pay in the future!
But I have a feeling we already started to pay for this!

The more important environmental issue is what you do with the tree after the holidays are over. Many communities offer recycling programs where they collect the trees separately at curbside trash pickup and grind them up for mulch instead of throwing them into a landfill.
Real trees are also better than the fake ones which are made from plastics and entail all the environmental troubles associated with the chemical industry. Some even contain lead.

Most Christmas trees sold commercially are grown on farms specifically for cutting. The farming is done the same way farming would be managed for any crop; the number of trees planted is coordinated with the harvesting. It is far preferable to use land for Christmas tree farming than many other uses, because over the years that the tree crop is growing, it provides all the benefits any tree provides, like filtering and cooling the air, sequestering carbon dioxide, etc. The more important environmental issue is what you do with the tree after the holidays are over. Many communities offer recycling programs where they collect the trees separately at curbside trash pickup and grind them up for mulch instead of throwing them into a landfill.
