I use off lotion, the one with the fresh scent. There's one variant that smelled like an herb or what that's why I like this better.

The best repellents that will actually keep mosquitoes off and work the longest do have DEET in them, but only use as directed i.e. do not spray massive amounts on skin under your clothes etc.

((DEET has an excellent safety record, despite some people's concerns. N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide doesn't sound like something you'd want to spray on your skin, and perhaps its acronym reminds people of the dangerous and now banned insecticide DDT. They're nothing alike...))

Get a yard spay with DEET, and for your body if you are concerned about safety try a non-DEET product like
Cutter Advanced, Repel Lemon Eucalyptus, OFF! Botanicals

(( A NEJM study shows that Skin-So-Soft worked as a mosquito repellent for an average of roughly 10 minutes, which hardly matched DEET products, or even soybean oil. In the study, a 2% soybean oil product called Bite Blocker for Kids protected against bites for an average of 94 minutes.

Avon does not market the original Skin-So-Soft oil as a mosquito repellent, but the company has come out with a formula containing IR3535, a new EPA-approved mosquito repellent.

IR3535 belongs to drug maker Merck, and it has been used as a mosquito repellent in Europe for 20 years. Avon's products are the only ones with IR3535 available in the U.S.))

I have not been luck with citronella candles or lanterns but what I do find most effective in reducing swarms of mosquitoes is home-made mosquito traps made from soda bottles and a small amount of active yeast.
directions = take a 2-liter plastic bottle and cut it in half flip the top upside down and stick it inside the bottom so it looks like a drain. Take a small amount of bakers yeast and add some blood temp. water to activate it... just enough to cover the bottom of the bottle. Put this in a dark place outside just above ground level and it will catch hundreds and hundreds of mosquitoes because they will fly in but can not fly out. After a few days it will really smell and look disgusting so just throw it away and make a new one to take it's place.

I just now read about
IBI-246
seriously, google it.
This should be approved soon and brought to market.

The best bug repellant is one in which you can use and not worry about exposing yourself, your pets, or your loved ones to potentially harmful chemicals.

Put a dryer sheet or two in your pocket. I haven't tried this before, but I read this makes a great mosquito repellant.

Also, for ants, use corn meal. For every pest, there is a silver bullet that doesn't put your family in harm's way. We only need to gain the knowledge.
