Is it easy to refill toner cartridges yourself?

With the current economy, I can't buy original anymore. I was thinking of buying remanufactured but I'm not sure how good they are. I am confident I should be able to refill a toner myself. I just have not done it before. Any thoughts?

It is quite a messy business. Although the refurbished ones are getting better now. You just have to make sure you choose the store well. See if they have any return policy or quality guarantee. Check out the reviews, too. It would help you a lot. The originals are just so expensive. You might even find refurbished printer inks at Staples if you are not comfortable buying online. I just like the fact that the remanufactured inks use recycled materials, you know. I dont know if you're into that but their products are not too bad.

Having done this once.... i'm not going to do it again. It depends on the model and type of cartridge, but i found it a horrible messy job... and the saving wasn't that great compared to nice clean recycled ones (that are cheaper than branded originals)

That's what I heard, too. It depends on the cartridge. Oh well, thanks guys. I'll just run to Staples to get my printer up and running again.

I've used some re manufactured ink cartridges before. They're really not as good as getting a brand new one. Some of them you'll be lucky if the ink and printing quality is even optimal, and some you'll be lucky if you'll be able to get more than a dozen printings out of the re-manufactured cart, or both.

I agree with you on the quality issue... the science that goes into making toner or ink is surprisingly advanced... and it isn't "a one size fits all" ( one black fits all cartridges?) solution.

If your printer is under any sort of warranty then using generics will also instantly void that as well

Yes it's indeed a messy job and time-consuming. When you insert it in the printer, it doesn't read the ink/toner level, so you can't tell how much is in the cartridge. The print quality is not as good as if you had bought a new one. It's not always possible to afford new ones which are quite expensive. Save some time and money and call the stores for a price that's affordable, it's always satisfying to have your stationery printed clean and sharp.
