Yes. I live in California, and we have mandatory brush clearance allowances from the distance of our homes. All things considered, most of us gladly voluntarily clear the brush away from our homes by a wide berth.
There are very few shake roofs left in California. Tile or composite is what you see here.
Making sure we have functioning hoses in good shape attached to all our spigots is a must.
Whenever there is a California brush fire, we are glued to the news to determine where it is and which way it is headed. Those who know they're in harms way usually evacuate before they are made to.
