Saying you live in the USA isn't enough in this case. The laws vary state by state. Also, there are municipal and possibly county/parish laws that can come into play.
To have enough space and the right climate you would have to live in the country in a southern state. That increases the chance of it being legal. But again, it depends upon exactly where you live.
By the way, it's not a good idea anyway. Wild animals do not make good pets. Cheetahs have been kept as pets, it's not as foolish as trying to keep a lion or tiger. But it's still not a good idea.
In New Orleans it would be illegal because of the Municipal Code, which prohibits wild animals as pets. You will have to get as specific as that about where you live.

First, cheetah's a wild animal that must live, obviously in the wild (lol) and they must remain that way.
Second, even though you brought a baby cheetah since birth home to make sure it will be accustomed to living in your place, these animals still use their instincts and at one point will turn wild over humans.
Third, imagine the amount of food that you would give him a day? How much fresh meat are you going to feed him? I think it's more wise if you'll just donate that amount of money to animal shelters if you wanted to help animals.
I know this is not a cheetah, but it's a wild animal too. Though this lion is trained, look at what he's done... :(

Can I have a Cheetah as a pet?
I live in the U.S, is it possible. Consider these things out- Let's say I have large amounts of money and space, so I can afford the food and enough land to run in. Tell me why I can or cannot.

Hi, Unfortunate you can't! It's a wild animal. They need to be in the wild! There great to watch etc... Did you hear about the woman who had the monkey who ripped her friends face off? It was in the state of Connecticut! It was unbelievable that the chimp could do such a thing!
