From what I can gather, due to a lot of media hype about the Rolling Stone interview, it has a lot to do with his sexual orientation.

Knowing that he was extremely popular as a contestant, I would not be at all shocked if we're going to see a lot more of him in the future. A few years ago, the runner up of the UK version of idol became a bigger success than the winner for a short time (Gareth Gates and Will Young).

Just because he came in second place doesn't mean he won't have a successful singing career. I think this article is just as much (if not more) about his future plans in the music industry as much as anything else.

Due to his recent popularity he may have used the article about him to come out as a publicity stunt or the magazine was truly interested in being a vessel for his publicly coming out. The magazine might have also felt like his story may have sold more copies of this months issue.
