This is a frequently asked question. I remember reading the writers' response multiple times over the years. The simple answer is that they wanted to avoid having to write into the story new races with new languages on a weekly basis and also avoid putting scenes into every show where SG-1 learns to communicate with the new culture. In other words, the writers didn't want to spend that much show time on dealing with a language barrier.

That explains why the writers wanted everybody to speak the same language. But it goes againts the sci fi fans common sense when, in the show, there is no explanation as to why everbody in the Universe, seperated by many lightyears, speaks the same language while here on Earth people speak different languages and only seperated by imaginary borders. It just seems like laziness that the writers couldn't come up with some simple explanation.

They do a good job explaining other things in the show. For example the writers need the characters to be on a different planet every week and they can't have them aging 10 or 20 years just because they had to travel a few lightyears, so they explain this with real worm-hole theories and the Stargate technology. They could have just had a magic doorway and not bothered explaining the science, but Sci Fi fans need more of an explanation when things defy common sense.

At least Star Trek had its universal translator for when they went to new planets. And even the last Star Trek series "Enterprise," that takes place before they had the universal translator, had to have a linguistics expert to communicate with new species.

Pretty much because Stargate is not about a gate to the stars. It is a business venture, about making money. Having linguistic complexity restricts your audience to geeks who want to learn new languages and thus restricts your income potential. Ergo, everyone speaks English.

Or, if you prefer, since all humans originated on earth speaking latin-based languages, and subsequently seeded the stars, everyone speaks a latin-derived language that is pretty easy to understand.

Also, the Goa'ould have their own language -- Chapa Eye, Tok'Ra, etc.
