Hands down it has to be Eddie Izzard!

All of his work is extremely funny and he doesn't feel the need to follow in the "normal" footsteps of comedians today!

Ricky Gervais. He is very smart and great standup and comedy writer... creator of the Office (UK & US), Extras and now movies.

I've got to go with John Cleese - he can effectively deliver many styles of comedy, including slapstick, irony, idiocy and sarcasm. Not only is he a comedy performer/actor, but is also an accomplished writer and producer. His comedic career has spanned 40 years now and he's still funny.

I was going to say John Cleese as well, but I think I'll go with Eric Idle instead. :P

I would have to say that Bill Bailey has to be up there, maybe not everyone's cup of tea but I like his unconventional style. However, he is not just a hilarious comedian, but he's also an accomplished musician too (something he makes great use of in his acts).

I was going to say John Cleese, as he's done so many memorable things beyond even Monty Python, but of the two, Eric Idle was always my favorite. Proof of his comedic genius:
