James Frey is a filthy liar who claimed that "A Million Little Pieces" - his so-called "memoir" - told the truth. For some reason that I can't even begin to conceive, the publishing house, editors, and other people responsible for fact checking managed to miss even the biggest lies, and the book was published as a memoir. Oprah decided that she wanted to make it one of her book club selections, which is pretty much gold as far as authors are concerned. If your book makes it to her club, half of America's going to buy it.
However, Frey was soon caught out. The Smoking Gun did some fact checking and uncovered more than a couple of Frey's falsehoods.
Oprah got all kinds of ticked off because she'd been tricked. When you publish a memoir, the events that you write about are supposed to have really happened, after all, but Frey had clearly not met this standard. She was ticked off enough to call Frey out on her show, in fact.
And so, those of us in the reading and/or writing communities know James Frey as "that liar from Oprah."

He wrote a book that was supposed to be a memoir, about overcoming addiction, and Oprah promoted it on her show, and he became hugely famous. Then it was discovered that he changed some details from what really happened, and Oprah had him on her show to say that she felt 'duped' by a false story.
