According to Bob Peterson Dug was added to the film so they could create a second family for Carl Fredericksen and help him move through the story

From the interview at the link below its pretty clear he bases the character on his own dogs! and how he plays with them. And the voice he says
"The voice came out of how I talk to my dogs. It's this earnest dog voice. "

So I think it was a personal choice based on the many dogs he's owned and others have owned, not one dog in particular :)
