By the time Hung was cut from the show, however, his performance was being played and talked about throughout the country. He soon became quite famous, appearing on dozens of shows. Koch Entertainment paid him a $25,000 advance and he recorded three albums: “Inspiration (on which Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs” appears),” “Hung For The Holidays,” and Miracle: Happy Summer from William Hung.”

His story is told in the 90-minute documentary “William Hung: Hangin’ With Hung.”

Hung dropped out of college for a while to pursue his music career but has since re-enrolled at California State University, Northridge.

What stands out about William Hung’s story is that, although he has provided the world with many laughs at his expense, he also did exactly what he set out to do. He became a recording artist, which is what is offered as the prize for winning “American Idol.”
