I would have to say Alien.
Most Science Fiction movies don't hold up for very long and after a while they begin to show their age, but watching it again recently... I'm still amazed at the set design and futuristic eye they used.
As you can see by the video clip, people are still using the movie's plot and ideas today!

I challenge anyone to watch Han get frozen in Carbonite without getting a little choked up. It took alot of courage to end the film on such a dark note, when most American audiences love a happy ending.

I love movies that explore issues of societal importance, and particularly those that show an underdog resisting an oppressive government.
Serenity has everything:
* Great dialogue
* Action (space battles, monster melees, fist fights and shootouts)
* Big Brotherish Empire vs heroic underdogs
* Humor
* Space ships
* Scary monster-like creatures
* Good acting, writing and directing
I especially like how the protagonists are independent minded people just trying to get by. This isn't Light vs Dark so much as independence vs Utopian fascism. You can almost believe that the events in this movie could come to pass in another few hundred years. I also like how there is no guarantee that any of the protagonists will succeed or even survive the film.
It's best if you watch the TV series Firefly before seeing Serenity, since that will give you deeper insight into the characters. Nevertheless, the movie works fine as a stand alone work and is accessible to folks who've never even heard of firefly.

This movie frequently airs on cable channels like SyFy, and is still shown on the big screen every year as part of an annual charity event: http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/events/

I love watching The Star Wars series again and again. Most of the Sci-Fi stories does not last for a long time. The writer and director have managed to create a fictional galaxy with memorable characters. I think this is one of the reason for making this movie the 3rd highest grossing all-time movie after James Bond and Harry Potter sequence. The overall revenue generated by the six Star Wars films has totalled approximately $4.3 billion.
