I personally prefer the history channel and food network. Still reality in a way.

Westerns were quite big in the 50's, believe it or not.
A genres monopoly of channels at any given time really boils down to profit and ratings.
We would all like to think that ;crime' and 'police dramas' are at the top of the list and they certainly are on the crown, but I would have to say that the 'reality' genre takes the cake.
When the networks realized that they could create these shows with a much smaller budget, they just took off!
Sure people complain about them, but rating never lie.

I'm not sure what you mean but I think the most popular type of television show is the reality television show. I think people prefer things that are real yet entertaining as opposed to the sitcom or drama. I personally prefer the history channel and food network. Still reality in a way.

I think TV genre that has most series and variation is Crime. There are Law and Order, CSI Vegas, CSI Miami, CSI New York, NCIS, Dexter, Criminal Minds, Bones, and many more. Foxcrime is a channel for all crime TV series, and most of cable TV most popular genre is crime genre.
