The riddle is "Why is a raven like a writing desk?" One answer I have heard is "they both have bills and tails/tales," but I was told that Lewis Carroll had meant for it to be an unanswerable riddle.
"'Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front!' This, however, is merely an afterthought; the Riddle, as originally invented, had no answer at all." (http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1173/why-is-a-raven-like-a-writing-desk)
