The daughter of Steve Irwin, Bindi Irwin appeared regularly in her father's tv shows and has taken up his calling of introducing people to animals. This is a litle more dangerous than your average tv show (as demonstrated by the picture) if she is influencable, but may be more appreciated, especially considering the main character is a girl.
She has a regular tv series, Bindi the Jungle Girl (amazon) and various other dvds out.
Meerkat Manor (amazon) is another great show I've been following for a few years, it follows the lives of a couple of tribes of Meerkats in the Kalahari Desert, and documents their lives with human-like reasoning, so people can relate.
This show was great, especially the first few seaons, but the producers have been known to modify the actual events to create a more compelling story through editing and filming different meerkats that they claim are the same ones. Also a few death references and a few other real-life situations exist, so it may not be suitable for all children, unsupervised.
If you're looking for fun japanese-animated drivel (in that there's no educational value but it's fun) then Kimba the White Lion (amazon) might be right for her. The animation is a bit old (1950) but the story is what inspired The Lion King, many say. Kimba speaks english to other humans and travelled once to Paris.
Lastly for a seasonal treat, I'd 100% recommend The Puppy Bowl (discovery), it runs simultaneously with the superbowl so you can watch it every year, and has a kitty half-time show.
Two more places I'd have you look if you haven't decided yet is this link from Disney about best shows for kids:

And these kids-friendly websites:

Have you also considered taking her to the zoo? That could be another highly educational gift choice.

What is a good animal/nature DVD or series geared toward younger children?
My niece is 7, and loves animals. I'd like to get her a fun and entertaining DVD or series for Christmas. I'm thinking that ''Planet Earth'' may be a bit too "mature" for her. Does anyone know of anything along those lines that would be more appropriate for younger viewers?

Jeff Corwin on Animal Planet always seemed to be child friendly and still entertaining enough for the adults in the house to watch along. You might try this collection: http://store.discovery.com/detail.php?p=84767&v=animal-planet_shows_the-jeff-corwin-experience

The Kratt Brothers have some entertaining shows geared toward kids. Among them are Be the Animal, Zoboomafoo as well as an online presence through their own site and though PBS which airs some of their programs. DVD's are available thought the PBS online store.

I thought of the Kratt Brothers at first, too. Unfortunately, the only DVD series that seems to be available for purchase through the PBS store is Zoboomafoo (unless you found others), which is "geared toward preschoolers," so may be a bit juvenile for what I'm looking for.

Be the Creature, which appears to be a National Geo show, is available on Amazon. I listed it as Be the Animal in my above post. It may be better suited to older kids.

Although I would love to take her to the zoo, we live pretty far away from each other, so it's not a possibility.
