You really shouldn't access sites that aren't permitted by your work, due to the fact the reason they block things like that is to protect their data and systems.
but you can of course tunnel through to your own server, or home computer using a ssh tunnel.
this guide explains how http://www.ytechie.com/2008/05/set-up-a-windows-ssh-tunnel-in-10-minutes-or-less.html
thats for windows, its a lot easier to do using linux.
you could also set up a proxy on your home computer, or rent a server.
a simple proxy server software that i use is privoxy, works on windows and linux.
http://www.privoxy.org/
there are pros and cons with both, if the computer you are using is windows, a proxy means you need no additional software, however on windows you will need a client, i suggest PuTTY to access ssh.

Anyway If you really want to risk your job and bypass the corporate firewall.
There 3 ways to do this:
1 remote desktop
2 VPN
3 Proxies
If you can do all three even better. You seam to already know about proxies so I will skip that. With a VPN you create a tunnel that no one can see though. Use this to connect to your Home PC, or proxies. Remote desktop works great you can us a program like LogMeIn Free/Pro to connect to your pc at home and use your home computer web browser to go to facebook. If you can use the VPN and remote desktop at the same time that would be best.
LogMeIn Free is free and you don't need to do anything to your work PC, but you will need to install it on your home PC.
Other tricks:
Add an s at the end of http. Example change http://www.facebook.com to https://www.facebook.com.
By a iPhone or other internet ready device and use that at work to reach facebook.
Hope this will be of help

I'm sure it's not in your contract anywhere that your employers pay you to update your status on various sites and chat to your friends. Even if you're using your accounts for activity you deem to be useful and interesting, there's a time and a place for personal activities and work just isn't it.

This isn't the answer you want but I would say that you should realise that those sites are blocked at work for a reason and that reason is YOU ARE AT WORK. I'm sure it's not in your contract anywhere that your employers pay you to update your status on various sites and chat to your friends. Even if you're using your accounts for activity you deem to be useful and interesting, there's a time and a place for personal activities and work just isn't it.
