The dog has to die, because he has been infected, and turns into a zombie-dog. Will is therefore forced to say goodbye to his one and only friend in the world. I thought it was one of the most emotional and strongest scenes in the entire movie. I read the book afterwards, and the same scene doesn't happen in the book, but the emotion of being lonely and longing for companion is definitely the main theme in the book. This dog-scene depicts this in a very strong way, as are the mannequins he has posted all over town...

One of the better Will Smith movies as far as I am concerned.

This picture perfectly shows the companionship of the two.

One of the themes of the film is loneliness, I think the dog's death adds to the tragic nature of the film.
