In Season Four of "Lost" the Island has a space time lens. Did anyone find that cool?

There is a gravitational Einstein lens around the Island. Desmond can go back and forward through time. Objects follow the space time curve when approaching or leaving the Island.

How do you think the gravitational lens works?

How would a strong electromagnetic field bend space time?

Why must Desmond find Penny in both times?
