Because the island isn't done with him. Remember when he tries to kill himself in the alley and suddenly Tom appears? Tom tells him to go ahead and try, but he can't die because the island still needs him.

Do you actually watch Lost? How can my answer be "ridiculous" when I'm getting my answer directly from the show! They always refer to the island as a being because incredible things happen there - dead people resurface, sick people are healed, Richard Alpert has never aged, etc., etc. I'll make sure to stay away from your questions for now on. I wouldn't want to "amaze" you anymore with my ridiculous answers.

Edit: Oh yeah, islands don't think -- but I guess "super heroes" are real, right?

Well, there's no such thing as super heroes either. And I didn't write the script. In the video I supplied, Tom states, “you can’t kill yourself, the island won’t let you.” It's a TV show. The writers can make rocks be alive if they wanted to. It's not reality.

"The Island is routinely personified by those who have been there, especially by the Others and Locke. It is often described as if it has motivations, abilities, and a conscience."

# Locke told Jack that the Island brought all the survivors to it.
# After his first encounter with the Monster, Locke stated, "I looked into the eye of this Island, and what I saw... was beautiful."
# Ben told Locke that the Island is very selective of who it chooses to heal. He added, "I can't wait to show you what this island can do."
# Tom told Michael that the Island wouldn't let him commit suicide because Michael still had "work to do".

It is Fate vs Free Will. It is Michael's Fate to be on the Kahana. He cannot die until he fullfills what he is "supposed to do".
