I'm curious: If Carrie Prejean had not made the comments she made, would those photos have cost the crown? Would they have even come out?

I think probably not. The uproar really began when Prejean gave her anti-same sex marriage answer to Perez Hilton's question.
However, she really continued this with her media comments continually talking about the situation. And that's when the photos were uncovered, and people started calling her a hypocrite for her family values talk regarding same sex marriage. That contrasted with her posing topless in photos, which seemed to contrast with her family values claims.
So yes, I believe if she had not made those comments, she would not have lost her crown. And she may have gone on to win the competition even, though that's up for debate.
