Hey @pocketarnie -

Have you ever taken this great movie outline and worked on making a screenplay with it?

If you're not concerned about your idea being taken, changed and revamped and used without any acknowledgment on your part, then go for it!

If you want to keep the idea under your name, I would highly recommend writing it down and mailing it to yourself so you'll have some sort of ownership on the idea.

If you just want him to see your idea with no strings attached, then just mail or call him at the addresses and phone numbers listed on the link below.

Addresses are for his production company Dream Works, his agent and attorney. Good luck!

Aren't professional directors under contract not to take scripts from anyone not in the Writers Guild? The movie industry is pretty closed to outsiders. If you don't have your idea properly documented and submitted they HAVE to ignore it just to protect themselves from litigation.

You may be right @silverhammer, but I'm not even sure that @pocketarnie even has it in 'script' form at this time.
It sounds like it's just an idea in his head at this point. That's why I offered up options in my answer... to give him ideas. I also included the contact information to Speilberg's attorney's office.

Mailing something to yourself doesn't give you any legal protection and it no longer holds up in court either. We are assigned a copyright on our writing the moment it is put into tangible form. There's no need to copyright it through a 'poor man's copyright', as you suggest here.

Any reputable manager or agent who is a member of the guild or the other societies of the industry will not steal an idea. It goes against their charters and bylaws. It's important to do your homework and know if an agency is reputable, but submitting to a reputable agency is not going to get the idea stolen.

It would be really hard to contact him personally. Your best bet is to show your idea to less prominent movie directors, and then have them help you move up the ranks to eventually show it to him.
If it is a great idea then you will hopefully, after a decent ammount of time, be able to show him.
Also try contacting him directly, but you will probably not get an answer.
Good luck to you!

As it's now so unfashionable to actually write a real letter to anyone, why not try it? Use decent writing paper, word it carefully with just enough content to make it interesting,Write as neatly as possible, not typed, and send for his personal attention care of the film studio. You should be able to track down the address maybe off the internet without to much trouble. You never know it might just get his attention. It wouldn't hurt to repeat the proces every few weeks and e-mail as well, if that's possible, persistance sometimes pays off!
