How many characters exist in the Marvel Universe?

If you went by superheroes, named humans, aliens, mutants, etc, the number is honestly too big to count.

But counting named important superpowered/Mutants/Etc characters, according to the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe (2006 Edition, the most current), there are 768 of these characters.

Look at this link and it will give you the most complete list I have found. I was going to try it by memory but this list aced me. You have to remember that these comic books have been going since marvel was Timely Comics back in1939 so there are a lot of characters. Just the A section alone has over 200 characters listed.
