*SPOILERS*
Well... the time travel element changed quite a bit...
The biggest surprise is that Vulcan got destroyed and there are only a few Vulcans now.
Minor surprises/strangeness: Uhura and Spock hook up. Pike doesn't get fried (well... not yet at least). Chekov is navigator immediately.
That's all I can remember right now...

I also see this will completely change the way the Search for Spock (Movie #3) since Vulcan no longer exist.
ST:TNG will have many changes since they imply that Vulcan logic plays a large role in how the Federation will develop and unfold.
For the most part Director J.J. Abrams and Executive Producer Rick Berman have just s--t on Gene Roddenberry while pissing on all the fans.
I thought the first part was very touching but it is VERY CLEAR that they want to re-write Star Trek. I was wondering why Gene's name was NEVER mentioned with this movie - Now I see why cause it is made for teenagers with unwarranted sex and a strong push away from the founding ideas of Star Trek. I remember going and hearing how many of the original cast members would talk about their conferring with NASA on new technology and political leaders like MLK for conquering controversial issues of the times; I see none of that in this movie.
I do see Hollywood bleeding a brand name just to make a quick buck. Anyone who was a fan should boycott this film and scold the jackasses who had a hand in ruining a Legacy.

The way I see it they pretty much just flushed everything on the time line down the tubes. With so few Vulcans left then I see that as a BIG change for Tuvok (to name one) and the role he played in getting Voyager to the BadLands in the first Episode. I also see this will completely change the way the Search for Spock (Movie #3) since Vulcan no longer exist.

I don't know that is that extreme. I don't agree with reinventing the the brand...but it does give a blank slate to work with. Also with the Enterprise series they were already rewriting the trek past...this was just the next step
