How can someone get the favorite Author or Celebrity autograph directly from them?

I don't really want to go through some memorabilia store where they jack up the price. I was hoping for advice on who to contact - like their agent or the celeb directly etc. Any advice is welcome!

I think you pretty much answered your own question. If the celebrity, author, sports figure, etc has a website, you can usually find contact information for their agent, publicist or manager. If the entertainment personality you are interested in does not have a website, you would contact the publisher, talent agency, movie studio/TV network PR depts and see if they will help you. There are some celebrities that rarely give autographs but it doesn't hurt to ask and I would like most PR representatives would be happy to help.
You could also look online to see if they have an "official" or even "unofficial" fan group.
