How can Dumbledore be in his painting after he is dead?

When he talks with Harry at the end of book 7 he is at the King's Cross station. Before that his portrait was probably already hanging aat his office. After the talk Harry returned to earth and Dumbledore "went on". How is it possible then that he still was in his portraite after the battle. Did that "going on" had any sense then?

Because the painting is not him exactly, but a likeness of him.

because the paintings can speak like the fat lady for the door to Gryffindor, so it probly knew what was going on when Dumbledoor was alive

its almost as the piantings are another version of the person all together

But the paintings appear after the death, so if it is another version it would only know what happened after it appeared

All headmasters appear in their portraits after death, and can move between them. That's one way we know Dumbledore is really dead, sadly enough.
