I've read nearly all of his work and have for the most part enjoyed it. I like his classic "terror" approach that is meant to spook the reader without grossing them out with excess gore.
If you are thinking about giving him a try, start with his short stories as that will give you a good sampling of his style without committing to an entire novel. I suggest this one:

It contains 16 short stories, including "The Call of Cthulhu". If you are a bit of a geek and would like to be able to understand the numerous Cthulhu references used by your friends, this story will give you a taste of what they are talking about.
