Have there been any other movie equal to Star Wars, as far as, drama?

List the movies equal or better than Star Wars, as far as, myth.

I liked "High Fortress" - a Japanese movie about a princess traveling through enemy territory with a bundle of Gold protected by a great swordsman.

Too many movies!

To quote from True West by Sam Shepard, "In this country we make movies. Leave the films to the French!"

Kurosawa is a fantastic and legendary visionary but last I checked...
There has not been any Seven Samurai action figures produced, no matter
how much I would a Toshiro Mifune with Kitana Slashin Arm.

Remember, Star Wars ushered in the movie franchise age.

Let us try to narrow it down to sci-fi only and keep it to the same era of the late 70s to mid 80s. Also, the movie should have the same amount of gravitas on the popular culture of America during that time. Of course, there must be licensing for t-shirts and toys.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - Allright. I know. There is no Richard Dreyfuss action figure.

E.T. - He was pals with Michael Jackson!

Alien and Aliens - Aaaah... smoking in space.

Terminators I and II - Governor of California.

Star Treks - Sulu, Uhura, Chekov, Spock, Kirk, KAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHNNN!

You've list box office thrillers, how entertaining. Will you return to the question?

I'm looking for movies strongly connected to myth.

* I'll give you Star Trek - connected to Roman myth and Shakespeare.
* Close Encounters - myths associated with aliens for outspace.

No myth challenges:
* ET (cute )
* Terminator (iRobot brainac)
* Aliens - (based on bees)

Allright. I missed the myth detail of the question.

Comic books which are the modern mythology of the exploration of the hero and is now extended by mainstreamed Hollywood.
1. Superman Movies.
Superman is the mythology of the immigrant American dream.
Alien comes to earth, is different but is constantly trying to fit in by disguising himself as a human and does good by protecting his adopted homeplanet. He is all powerful but his secret identity is to be vulnerable like us. He wants very hard to assimilate and fit in. Thats a Kill Bill reference.
He is also the embodiment of ultimate good and hope.
He cannot tell a lie.
He has even been labeled by Bruce Wayne as a "Boy Scout." See Batman the Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller.

Greekwise he is the Heracles of the comic book/movie pantheon. He was the greek ideal of a hero figure. Read The Twelve Labors which is account of all his feats of strength and ingenuity.

2. Batman Movies.
Batman is the Anti Hero of Superman. An orphan like Superman. His disguise, gadgets and smarts gives him his strength and power. His moral code and ethics is different that Superman. He is the dark hero that will go around and outside societal moral codes to stop monsters and criminals that do not have any moral code themselves.
Batman could be compared to Odysseus: smart, cunning, a great fighter, and used his wits to outsmart the Cyclops, sirens and he came up with the i Trojan Horse.
Odysseus was both loved and hated. Homer writes him as hero. Virgil writes him as a a "cruel Odysseus." Loved and hated.
Sound familiar Batman?

But since we are making lists. Below deals with American mythology and few are obvious Greek myths.

Godfather I and II
Goodfellas
Mean Streets
Taxi Driver
Boyz N the Hood
Forrest Gump
Unbreakable
Clash of the Titans
2001 A Space Odyssey
A Clockwork Orange
Excalibur

I would rank the following movies as superior to Star Wars in both drama and myth:

The Lord of the Rings
Spirited Away
Matrix (the original only)
The Day After Tomorrow
Raiders of the Lost Ark

I'm sure I could name more, but my largest point is that I've always been underwhelmed by the Star Wars franchise. They were decent stories that dragged heavily at points, suffered from self-importance, and failed some key elements of what makes a movie truly brilliant, including humor. The movie had virtually no sense of humor and no characters to really LOVE (at least, not in my opinion).

Whereas, I still dream about Aragorn at night.

Yes. My husband knows all about Aragorn. Mostly because I shudder everytime he pushes those giant doors open. Mmmmmm.

@davepamn, the story myth of Spirited Away was the Japanese fable of a spirit world where one can become enslaved and lose their name. An evil witch cast spells over people, and a young warrior girl must see see beyond the guise of what appears to be good and evil to find her true love. The myth is full of action, riddles, dilemmas, magic, and love.

Forget "The Day After Tomorrow", I was distracted and typed the wrong title I was thinking of (stupid Sesame Street distracting me!). I MEANT to type "28 Days Later". In that movie, the myth is about the human soul, and if it can be corrupted into a zombie state. It's full of drama about the nature of man and good vs. evil.

"Raiders" is about the ark, and about the supernatural power buried behind Biblical stories. Again, we have good forces battling evil forces, great action, and surprisingly complex characters.

Well, the most obvious one is Lord of the Rings of course. Approximately same length of the movies, giant story arc, good guys, super-villian, betrayal, ultimate sacrifice to reach the goal. There are many parallels in both movie series.
Main difference is that LotR was based on a book, and Star Wars not. And of course Gollem had a way better reception than my personal hero Jar Jar...

I can't think of any other movie with a similar 'grand' drama story.

Lord of the Rings had a great "Norse Viking" like battle scene.

Ow, if you don't mind that it's a series, not a movie, you might also consider Battlestar Galactica!

Excellent movie and based on a true history. Star Wars was influenced by the drama of this story, "a few against many" - brilliant strategy of a few defeating an army of bandits.

I didn't think the "Magnificent Seven" was better than the "Seven Samuri". Toshirō Mifune role as Kikuchiyo is unrivaled.

Thanks! Being a fan of Star Wars this was a very difficult question for me to answer, but I do think Seven Samurai fits the bill. Kurosawa is brilliant, his films are fantastic, and I think this is his finest.

There is also an argument that Star Wars was influenced by the Vietnam Police Action that was occurring during that decade by disguising it as a sci fi epic.
The "few" and "primitive" Viet Cong defeated the the richer and more technologically powerful USA. The Ewok Battle of Endor illustrates this historical point much to the outcry of fans.

Please clarify, the theme "a few against many" comes from what myth?

when the movie 300 came out there was a big hype for this movie, i personally loved it when it first came out but when i saw it the second time i kind of thought it was wierd. Probably because the second time i saw it on a low grade theater. As far as drama, I would suggest Pelican Brief

Read 300 the Graphic Novel written and illustrated by Frank Miller.
Read Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield which is a historical fiction account of the great Battle of Thermopylae.
The true story overshadows the movie. Talk to any modern Greek today and they all know the true story of the 300 spartans.
