Gilbert does not get eaten at the end, but does resolve many of the inner conflicts and questions that have been "eating" at is soul.

If you're looking for a story where the main character does get eaten at the end, try "Little Shop of Horrors" (the live musical, not the movie version). Seymore and Audrey both become food for Audrey II - the plant.
