I think you pretty much got it, the rest of the energy was funneled into making the key. They never were really big on long explanations. The key felt like a bit of an afterthought in that episode. You can rewatch it on netflix for free of you want to analyze.

Doctor Who: Explain how the Doctor converts Kalifraz into the second key to time?
The Pirate Planet (Kalifraz) is crushing planets into micro size and suspending it using Karitic geometry.
The Old Queen of Zanek is suspend in a time slow down. The regenerating Queen is using time dams to create celluar projection to become real. The time dams use energy from the crushed planets.
It sounds like the doctor uses the captains technology of planet compression, to compress Kalifraz into a quarter shape, and later picks up the second piece of the key to time later, in the time vortex. What is your intrepretation?
