I think if the story behind the dance numbers and other over-the-top stuff (and don't get me wrong, I LOVE "over-the-top") is awesome then it can be delivered in any number of ways and be a success...as long as the musical aspect doesn't ruin the storytelling then I think a large sampling of film fans are gonna like it.
So if the genre keeps gaining in popularity then the stories being written for the films are going to keep getting better and better and that can only help the Bollywood industry. I just don't think the genre on its own merits will be able to grow enough to be globally huge in the long term.

At least right now I would say that the international appeal of the kind of sprawling musicals that Bollywood is churning out is perhaps slightly growing, although not to the extent that I would guess it would break through and be a cinematic force in the long term.
