It's a while since I had a turntable, but I'm pretty sure the size doesn't matter.
What is important are the available playing speeds.
If I remember correctly, vinyl records could play at 33, 45 or 78 rpm. (rpm = revolutions per minute). 78s were mainly very old records though. So if your record player can handle can handle right speed, you should be ok. 7" singles used be mostly 45 rpm I think, whereas LPs used to be 33 rpm.
The other thing to think about it how automated your record player is. Is it going to always try to automatically find the beginning of the disk in the same place? Or can you manually put the needle where it should go?
As far as I remember, pretty much all turntables could play both the main sizes and both the main speeds.

the turntable my dad has only has 2 speeds (33 1/3 rpm and 45 rpm) but my wifes parents have one that is 3 speeds (78 rpm, 33 1/3 rpm and 45 rpm). so u must make sure that the one u have has 45 rpm as a selection.

Do 7" records play on all record players?
I'm thinking buying a 7" record but I am not sure if it will play on my record player. It plays the 12" records, but are all record sizes compatible with all record players?

There used to be a little insert for the center spindle of a record player that would allow you to play both the records with the big holes in the center and those with the smaller holes. Speeds were determined not by size but by a setting on the player. Wow. That's a bit of information I never thought I'd need again!

You would be surprised. A lot of the bands I'm listening to now a days are releasing singles or their whole album on vinyl.

u have to get a little plastic thing to fit the big hole and convert it to a smaller hole. and then set the speed of the turntable to 45 rpm. then they will play fine. the turntable my dad has only has 2 speeds (33 1/3 rpm and 45 rpm) but my wifes parents have one that is 3 speeds (78 rpm, 33 1/3 rpm and 45 rpm). so u must make sure that the one u have has 45 rpm as a selection.
