This depends on what kind of software you are talking about. Making movies? Watching movies? Ripping movies? On a Mac or PC?

I'm also a fan of VLC, it seems to be able to play any freakin' format I can find which is great!

I also like Media Player Classic, just because it's a no-frills media player in the style of the old MS media player v6.
