1/2 cup sugar
1 tbs kosher salt
2 cups honey
1 ts orange zest
4 cups walnut halves
Pre-heat oven to 350. In a metal mixing bowl combine sugar and salt; set aside. Cover cookie sheet with foil. In saucepan over medium heat, simmer honey and zest for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in walnuts, in two batches. Place coated walnuts on cookie sheet; bake for six to ten minutes. Remove from oven and transfer immediately to metal bowl, tossing well to coat in sugar mixture. Remove nuts from sugar and cool completely on wax paper-lined baking sheet.
The simmer for the honey is very light. Also, don't get hot honey on your hand(I learned from experience)!
I've found that at least eight minutes in the oven works best. When the honey is "puffing up" over the walnuts, they've baked long enough.
Make lots of these!

Mix up some homemade Hidden Valley Ranch dressing, stir in a handful of cocktail shrimp. The really tiny ones, about the size of your thumbnail. Keep in the fridge for at least two hours before serving. Use carrot sticks or celery sticks to dip. Don't skimp and use bought dressing. mix it up from the package. The difference is startling.

Slice french bread on the bias creating a thin strip of bread, then toast it.
Cook pork belly until it's done and season very lightly with salt. It should not taste salty, and for this reason, bacon isn't a good substitute.
Drizzle a little honey over this, and top with thinly sliced green apple.
Just before serving, grind fresh black pepper over the top.
If you want something with a bolder flavor, use gorgonzola instead of black pepper, but be sparing with it.
Figs topped with blue cheese, lightly warmed, and drizzled with honey is another nice but unusual small bite.

What is a new appetizer/finger food I could take to a party?
I have several parties to go to the next several weeks where people are expect to pitch in and bring things, particularly snack foods. These kinds of foods seem to have fads, where suddenly everyone is bringing things no one ever heard of before. I work from home rather than an office. Some offices have pitch-ins for peoples' birthdays, etc. and I noticed when I did work in an office that there was sometimes one-upmanship going on with what was brought in.
So what are the "new" things to bring now?

I recently had a appetizer that I thought was amazing and would work well at a party. Here's how to make it: Slice french bread on the bias creating a thin strip of bread, then toast it.
