How many bottles of champagne per guest?

For a New Year's Eve party, how many bottles of champagne should one plan to have per person? Say the party is 3-4 hours long, with appetizers and dessert, but no sit down dinner.

I do one bottle for 2 people if you have about 10 people attending. If you have more people attending, then go with 3-4 people per bottle. Not everyone drinks the bubbly. The goal is to have one or two extra bottles at the end of the night.

I also prefer to start the night with a nicer bottle of champagne. This will give everyone a nice taste. Some people, not me, but some people prefer a spumante. This is sweeter and not very expensive.

The average bottle contains 6 glasses worth of champagne. Since party etiquette states someone should not drink more than 2 glasses of any drink provided by the host, you are probably safe with 1 bottle per every 3 people at your party.

This is, of course, dependent on the type of friends you plan on having at your party and what kind of drinkers they are. If you think your friends won't stand by the typical etiquette you may want to buy extra.

Hi!
You want to throw a great party, so there's only one thing that stands in your way - running out of champagne. My basic feeling is that you can not have too many. Visit your local store for one bottle per person. Ask for a discount or visit a discount store for a deal. Worst case - you can always return or drink extras at a later date.

Make sure you can keep them all cold, and keep plenty of water for your guests. :)

Happy new year!

Have one glass per person of a decent bubbly, then another glass per person of cheapo bubbly like Cristalino.
