You want to motivate high-quality answers right? And lots of them?
So how about this... a raffle with a difference...
Every time someone gets a five-star rated best answer, they get one virtual raffle ticket. At the end of month / quarter / year, however long you want to run it for, you pick a winner at random from the virtual raffle.
Advantages:
a) You're only in with a chance of winning for giving suberb answers
b) The more superb answers you give, the better your chances
c) It's fun and fair, no one will be annoyed they missed out
You can show people their raffle tickets along with their points and M$.
Personally, I'd love something like this. It would add a lot of excitement to writing great answers.
Risks to mitigate:
a) Now there's a bit more incentive to try to game the system
b) Would this affect how people rate answers? Will they be more generous, or meaner in their ratings?
You can probably come up with variations on this. e.g. Instead of one raffle ticket for every 5-star answer, you get one ticket for every ten 3-star answers, one for every five 4-star answers, and one for every two 5-star answers.
That way everyone has some chance, and the more top-notch answers you give, the more chance you have.
Just remember, if Darcy wins, do include a Wii as well. :)

The first 3 Mahalo users, not employed by Mahalo to become black belts will be put into a raffle to win one!

Awwwweeesome. That's going to be a big contest.
You're going to have to make it something really good. The capitalist in me is also saying that you should make the contest good enough to draw in enough traffic to at least break even on the purchase. The contest has to be something big enough to create a huge marketing buzz.
I'm stretching to think of huge contest ideas. This is a toughy.
A standard ballot type entry would be fair and likely bring in a surge of new users from around the web.
What about a "best question" ballot system. Ask a question and if 5 people vote it interesting, you get a ballot? Interesting questions will make MA thrive.
You could do a Stern inspired contest where every Mahalo shoutout in mass media (radio, print, blog, whatever) receives a ballot. Users would spread the word, but folks might not really get what Mahalo Answers is and sign up.
Yeah, I could keep going with these but again... wow. I'm amazed at this contest. I'm quite excited. I know I'll be entering. I want one of these cars in a bad way.
Jason, just on the off chance... you're happy with your wife, right? :)

On top of that, you can have each of your guides nominate a certain page they completed on Mahalo for the contest. All the other members here on Mahalo vote for the page they like the best and of which they think is the best quality page.
In my opinion, this would allow individual people to vote on the quality of a page which may bring increased traffic since they will have a direct influence on the people that win.
Of course, you could always give the car away to some random person (like me for example, haha).

Do a huge PR blitz / promo for Mahalo and give the car to the 100,000th member. There's a huge potential in the "lead-up" and even more on the "post-giveaway". PR on the winner, PR on 100,000 members, PR, PR, PR...

It should be set up in such a way that a casual Mahalo answers user is still inclined to enter while adding enough incentive (better chance of winning) for those who really contribute to the site.

I would just award a raffle ticket for every point earned.
That allows you to advertise "Create an Mahalo account for a chance to win" since creating an account gets you some free points.
It also rewards the existing community with a better chance to win since they will likely have accumulated more points.
I know (from TWiT) that you're a big Tesla fan, Jason. Use this to advertise the heck out of Tesla's and electric cars in general!

As for the photo's they are nice. I think that car is designed very well. I wish you lots of luck and traffic for however you use it at Mahalo!
Oh and here is a photoshoped version that shows what it might look like under that sheet.

I would suggest setting up a link tier system to track number of new members signed up by each entrant - sort of like commission junction

Yes, it's a great car! You should give away a Tesla Model S (the photo or the car?) for the first 2-3 black belts. Will answer for Tesla Model S! The photo or the car. The first 3 Mahalo users, not employed by Mahalo to become black belts will be put into a raffle to win one!

That's exactly what I was thinking!! So, something like "Best Answers x Belt level."
So, it might turn out that the raffle tickets look like this:
20 Best Answers X 1 (for White Belt) = 20 tickets
20 Best Answers X 2 (for Yellow Belt) = 40 tickets
20 Best Answers X 3 (for Green Belt) = 60 tickets
20 Best Answers X 5 (for Purple Belt) = 100 tickets
20 Best Answers X 10 (for Brown Belt) = 200 tickets
20 Best Answers X 20 (for Black Belt) = 400 tickets

My first instinctive response is 'give it to me!'. However, if your intent is to increase traffic to the site, I would recommend a raffle system whereby individuals would get a raffle entry for joining Mahalo, asking a question, answering a question, referring a friend who subsequently joined, etc. I would personally put a limit on the number of entries for answers and questions or the quality would seriously degrade. This puts an element of chance, while keeping the quality up and driving traffic to the site.

I would stress a limit of entries per day. Besides some people don't have Hours to spend answering question, but still have good answers when they do. MUST KEEP QUALITY UP.

I think a raffle open to all users (or all who "answer" the raffle page), but with the chance for extra entries for higher belt levels, 5 star ratings etc., would be the best combination. It should be set up in such a way that a casual Mahalo answers user is still inclined to enter while adding enough incentive (better chance of winning) for those who really contribute to the site.

I think this is the best possibility so far. It gives newbies like me a hope (no matter how slim) of winning. It seems to me that the point system is designed to measure the quality of a user's contributions to Mahalo. Thus that would be the fairest measure of who should win. But you can't just give it to the person with the most points, because that takes away all the spirit of the competition. A raffle ticket for every point earned would be the best and most open method to give it away.

I would love the 4 door they are promising sometime soon. I have 2 kids and really have no use for the roadster kind of car currently. Maybe in 15 years when I'm carting them around less. But for now give me the 4 door. As for the photo's they are nice. I think that car is designed very well. I wish you lots of luck and traffic for however you use it at Mahalo!

Why are you giving the car away? To increase awareness of Mahalo, right? I agree that answers are key, but what about people that do not know WHAT Mahalo is? I would suggest setting up a link tier system to track number of new members signed up by each entrant - sort of like commission junction

I'm not sure that lower belts would feel that it was fair for upper belts to get more tickets per best answer. But if the competition is running long enough that people have a chance to move up belt levels that might not be such a big issue for them. Also it would provide that incentive to people to want move up fast, beyond just the fun and kudos of it.
So I think it could be win for you, as long as the lower belt people are happy with it. Of course, now that I've made purple (yay!) I'd be quite happy to get extra tickets personally! :)
20 Best Answers X 1 (for White Belt) = 20 tickets
20 Best Answers X 2 (for Yellow Belt) = 40 tickets
20 Best Answers X 3 (for Green Belt) = 60 tickets
20 Best Answers X 5 (for Purple Belt) = 100 tickets
20 Best Answers X 7 (for Brown Belt) = 140 tickets
20 Best Answers X 12 (for Black Belt) = 240 tickets
Or something like that.
