"Kids taking too long to grow up? Just eat 'em. A wide range of animals gobbles their own kids — polar bears, burying beetles, hamsters, wolf spiders and a range of fish species" {information taken from http://www.livescience.com/animals/080206-cannibal-parents.html}
"A report published by Oxford University Zoologist Dr. Michael Bonsall and Hope Klug from the University of Florida says females may commit infanticide to gain increased access to physical resources (food or space), bias the sex ratio of the litter, or eradicate further problems if the baby is sick or refuses to feed. By killing ill pups, the mother may then allocate her precious resources to those pups more likely to survive. You see it most often in species that produce many offspring. They usually do that when the offspring have a poor chance of survival, so they have to make a great many of them. That means that each one has a relatively small investment and isn't that important.
So, when a larger proportion of offspring survive, they can afford to eat a few of them, or even many of them. They're full of nutrition, being made up of the same stuff as the parents. Cannibalism is dangerous in humans partly because of the way disease spreads and partly because it interferes with the way humans organize their societies; most other species practice cannibalism.
This is actually to the benefit of the remaining offspring, because it reduces competition for food and other resources. It's also possible that it's a form of predator relationship, where the parents cull out the weakest of their children, but this hasn't been demonstrated.
This applies to any species, whether it's scorpions or birds. Don't apply human standards: humans have a very limited number of very expensive offspring and we treat them very differently. Nature is all about mathematics: it rewards what works. And "filial cannibalism" appears to work pretty well.
