Why do people pronounce "food" as "feud"?

I hear this mispronounciation a lot, both on TV - - mostly on the Food Network - - and in "real" life. It doesn't appear to be a local dialect or accent. Are people just lazy, or is there a "valid" reason for this?

albanian: I am certain it is not regional.
Just listen carefully to virtually any TV show or movie, these days.

As for "psionandy", please re-read my question.

Why is it not helpful for me to tell you that I have not heard this incorrect pronunciation? I don't watch tv but sometimes I listen to the radio. And, no one speaks that way that I know. Are you American? Do you watch mainstream things or ethnic things?

@skaizun... You seemed to have missed the point of my reply.

In the total lack of any evidence that people are mispronouncing the word 'food' to make it sound like 'feud' I can only assume that in your area they mispronounce feud to make it sound like feud.

If you have any clips demonstrating the 'food' thing this then by all means post them.

I am absolutely stunned that anyone would give albanian's response a "helpful answer" nod. All he/she did was say, "I don't know." In what possible, non-sugar rush, way was that helpful?!?!?

I didn't say "I didn't know", I said I had never heard this. That is additional information for the asker to consider. In particular, it is evidence that the accent may be regional. Or, even that he has misheard. No one else seems to have heard it either. @skaizun seems to have a peculiar view of questions and answers.

Saying these things out loud I have come to the conclusion it requires less effort to say food then feud (one vowel sound as opposed to two) thus I do not belive this to be lazyness.

Merriam Webster only lists one prounciation. . .
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/food

This could be a case of regional accents.

No, it is not regional. You can hear it being mispronounced on virtually any TV program or movie, these days; the program's content doesn't matter nor does the speaker's origins.

LOL well in that case we seem to have an issue where people think it sounds "cool". If enough people with enough athority say it the wrong way people will pick up on the habit.

If Emiril starts calling it "Fid" that may catch on like wild fire.

I see a tragic flaw with Mahalo, when the same people (in this case, buddawiggi and psionandy) are able to give "helpful answer" nods to more than one respondent, not to mention that neither of the two responses could be construed as such in any way. I am truly dumbfounded.

As such, I am very disappointed in Mahalo,
and will not bother wasting my time on this site, any further.

I actually thought this site was more intelligent than Yahoo Answers.
Thank you, everyone who responded and/or left a comment
and/or voted a response as "useful", for shattering that illusion
and ruining my experience on this site.

I don't think its a flaw... in the system, which you proved by picking "no best answer". It was valid to point out that there did seem to be a flaw in the premise of the question.

I DON'T hear it in "virtually any TV program or movie". I can't recall hearing it in ANY. So its unfair to blast someone for pointing this out.

It would have been nice if you could have posted a clip/link/something that would have clarified what you were talking about.

@skaizun I'm sorry you feel that way. I am just dumbfounded as well, being a regular viewer of the food network I have never heard this mispronunciation and would sincerely wonder if the issue was with *your ability to hear* correctly and not the continuous mispronunciation of the word by as series of people that it seems only you have heard this from.

I would recommend a hearing test or as mentioned above posting the audio file here so we can see exactly what it is you are hearing.

I have gone to Yahoo Answers as a bit of exploratory fun and you cannot seriously feel this question would be bettered answered there so I am assuming you know this and are in a poor way trying to insult our intelligence.

This is in poor taste.

I urge you to be more clear and provide an audio track of this anomaly and we will, if anyone can at all, get to the bottom of this but please there is no need to resort to name calling.

I offered several possibilities, but if you are looking for a very clear cut answer I doubt you are going to get one.

Some how I seriously doubt there is a secret Food (feud) Network memo telling people to say Feud. If you do find such a memo, I will tip you M$5 upon verification of it's authenticity.
