Here are the differences:
APA Style:
Uses author name, date of publication, and page number
Uses last name and first initial. Lists all authors
Capatilizes first word
Uses full name
Lists state abbreviations where city is minor
Lists first page and additional pages
Date follows authors name
First line of an entry is indented, second and next lines are flush with the left margin
MLA:
Uses author name and page
Spells out avaliable names, if more than 3 list first and et al.
Capitalizes every important word
Shortens names
Only lists city
Uses + for pages after the first one
Dates at end of citation
First line flush with left margin, next lines indented

APA is commonly used in psychology, education, and other social sciences
MLA is commonly used literature, arts, and humanities

My personal belief? They do this to mess us up. The same reason they have us buy $200 books we don't need, and take math classes that we'll never use in our career. Just to see how much we can strain our brains.

Why are there different citation formats for writing bibliographies? Are there specific purposes for each one?
I know that APA and MLA are the two major styles, but I'm not really clear on the differences between the two, whether major or minor.

• Awesome, thank you very much for the play-by-play there. I'm going to refer back here for a little cheat-sheet of the differences.
And for the record, I 100% agree with you on the nefarious goals of the bibliographic powers that be. :]
