If you are planning to go directly from undergraduate to graduate while you're in the university, I would recommend that you wait until you are within a year of applying for graduate school. On the other hand, if you are fairly sure that you will go directly from undergraduate to graduate school, you can take the test as soon as you have completed all of your mathematics and language courses so that they are fresh in your mind. I was pleased that even though I took my GRE test more than 15 years after completing my undergraduate degree, I still remembered the information pretty well!

I wrote my GRE after I had already applied to graduate school. My university allowed me to be accepted as a provisional student for up to 9 credit hours (equiv. of 3 one-semester courses) before I had to finalize my application for the masters program. So I wrote and passed my GRE during the time that I was enrolled in my third course.
