Part of the trick of Google is figuring out your search terms. That can be a trick when the word you're searching for has alternate meanings.

A good alternative is Clusty. It's great for this, because it clusters terms. So if you're looking for something with several meanings, it will cluster each result in its own folder so you can find the one you're looking for.

Another one I use a lot is Good Search. This is because it gives a cent a click to the charity of my choice. The results are Yahoo's, I think. So rather than use Yahoo, I use Good Search.

Here are some other search engines that may work for you.

AllTheWeb.com
AskJeeves.com
Dogpile.com

These use "spiders" (automated programs) to read thousands of pages per day, and index them for easy finding later.

Goggle is the best. It has a comprehensive database and it stores every search ever done in it some 200 million searches a day.

Fun facts:
* Google serves more than 59 million unique visitors each month
* More than 200+ million search queries per day are performed per day
* It has gained 27 million unique global visitors in just a year (September 2002)
* Google runs on Linux OS and they have more than 10000+ servers
